Your Story: Just a Trim

An OT lifts a patient's spirits with a hair cut.

Print ArticleEmail Article

I worked with a sweet CVA patient who had aphasia with leftside weakness. Everyday I saw her she became labile and felt like giving up hope due to the result of her stroke and her inability to perform activities. The patient mentioned how badly she needed a hair cut and was disgusted with looking at herself in the mirror. As a therapist I was very touched and wanted to help out. So I decided first, as part of our therapy session, to have the patient locate hairdressers in the local community and to identify and verbalize the potential hairdressers that may be able to come to our rehab unit to cut the patient's hair. I then called the various salons the patient wrote down and told them about the her request. A few days later a hair stylist called me back and agreed to come in to cut and style my patient's hair. The patient was very happy, which helped to lift up her spirits!
