View Comments (0)Print ArticleEmail Article

Beginning this summer, Towson University will have something new to offer TU students and the community. The College of Health Professions will establish the Institute for Well-Being in the Towson City Center, currently under renovation, at One Olympic Place (formerly One Investment Place). The institute will serve people of all ages from the community and will partner with health and community organizations.

The new institute will comprise four centers including:

  • The Center for Adults with Autism;
  • The Speech, Language and Hearing Center;
  • The Wellness Center;
  • the newest outreach service, the Occupational Therapy Center

These centers are currently dispersed across the Towson campus, or in the case of the Occupational Therapy Center, under development.

"By establishing the Institute for Well-Being under one roof in Towson, we will strengthen partnerships between Towson University and the surrounding communities while also enhancing student education and experience. The institute will offer clinical, health promotion, and inter-professional instruction to our students in the health professions," says Dean Charlotte Exner.

Part of the institute space will include a 1500 square foot fully accessible model apartment that will be used to help adults with autism and others with cognitive and physical challenges address life skills while educating students in their professional roles. A therapeutic program for children with speech, language or sensory motor needs will offer state-of-the-art services including a playground with specialized equipment.

New and expanded outreach programs include the Comprehensive Cancer Wellness program designed to improve functional capacity to the person's pre-diagnosis level, and the Stroke Survivor's Support and Education group. Hard hat tours of the center will be available in the spring.
