View Comments (1)Print ArticleEmail Article

The Sensory Processing Foundation (SPDF) has created a special Web page to educate therapists who want to comment on the new draft of the DSM-5, the latest diagnostic manual for mental health disorders now under review by the American Psychatric Association (APA).  The URL is http://www.spdfoundation.net/dsmvcomments.html#ots it is important to give the reviewers the kind of information they need to keep sensory processing disorder (SPD) in the draft.  Until the final draft is approved with SPD included, it is not yet part of the DSM-5. The manual is now scheduled to come out in 2013, a year later than was originally planned.

You must register with the DSM site to officially comment, but registration is free. Parents, physicians and others who work with children who have the disorder are encouraged to comment. The comment period will end April 20.

I have worked with children in the school systems for about 7 years. It is clear to me that there are students with symptoms that appear to be foundationally sensory difficulties. However, due to the lack of sensory processing disorder diagnostics in the DSM, the have to be given other diagnoses or are labeled as behavioral or disruptive children. I am lucky to work in a school that allows me to service these children under 504's or response to intervention. My school's highly values the knowledge and input that OT has to offer. The outcomes of OT intervention that I have to offer from a sensory processing frame of reference have resulted in positive outcomes, and a much better understanding of these children.
